I got to see where they bottle the inks, create the writing pads, and customize products. The place was an amazing mix of state of the art machinery and things done by hand. For example the machine to fill the bottles with ink was spanking new and very precise. Nearby, a man was hand operating a machine to create prestigious deckle edges on high-end G Lalo correspondence cards.
Another thing I saw that I wish I’d taken a photo of is the hand-dipping of the wax seals on the tops of the ink bottles. The wax is melted and mixed, and each bottle is dipped and finished by hand by a real human person. It’s a delicate and time-consuming process, but the result is so elegant and can’t be replicated by any machine.
