I recently found this quote from Confucius:
When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.
There’s so much I love about this seemingly-simple quote:
First of all, it acknowledges that it’s easy to get discouraged by our goals and to see them as impossible, or at least they seem so from where we are standing.
It also reminds us that goals are not reached all at once, but by numerous steps.
And the operative word here is ACTION. Reaching your goals requires action, doing things, making things happen. You won’t get there by doing everything the same as you’ve done before.
It reminds us that things change when you are working toward your goals. Roadblocks happen. You can find a way around, over, or through them. Be flexible in your plans so you can adjust them when you need to. “Don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”
Does it seem like your goals can’t be reached, at least from where you currently are?
How can you adjust your action steps (what can you do differently) to get back on track toward your goals?
