Month Theme for August: Dealing With Uncertainty

Post Comment

On the first Wednesday of each month we have a post with the month’s theme. The month theme is something to think about, journal about, include in your daily intentions, and/or be mindful of all month.

You might be dealing with uncertainties right now. Students who are going off to university, people who are moving, starting a new job, or beginning a new life chapter face the unknown with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

Life is full of uncertainties. The reality is, nothing is guaranteed. We can’t take anything for granted, because tomorrow might be completely different from today. The only certainty is change, and the only thing we can control is how we deal with change.

All of this is unsettling. There is good change and there is bad change, and both affect us.

I’ve dealt with a lot of uncertainty over the years. My initial reaction was to try to control it. I thought that would make me feel better, but it didn’t. It made me feel more anxious and unsettled.

What I finally learned was that I can’t control change. I can be prepared for change (financially, emotionally, physically), but in the end I can’t control what happens. I developed a certain amount of flexibility. Instead of making hard future plans, I roll with it. Instead of setting a long-term path for myself, I take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

Facing uncertainty requires a certain amount of optimism:

Human spirit is the ability to face the uncertainty of the future with curiosity and optimism. It is the belief that problems can be solved, differences resolved. It is a type of confidence. And it is fragile. It can be blackened by fear and superstition. Bernard Beckett

What can you do to help yourself deal with uncertainty?
