Theme for March: Mindfulness + Gratitude = …

On the first Wednesday of each month we have a post with the month’s theme. The month theme is something to think about, journal about, include in your daily intentions, and/or be mindful of all month.

This month’s theme is a combination of mindfulness and gratitude. It is: Enjoy the Moment. This is not always as simple or easy as it sounds!

You can find something to enjoy in most day-to day-moments. I like to switch around a slightly annoying situation and find things to enjoy, appreciate, and be grateful for.

For example when I’m working and my dog goes to the door to ask to go outside AGAIN. I’m busy!

But then I stop and reassess. I love my dog. One of the perks of working from home is I get to be with her all day. She is affectionate and fun. We go for hikes in the forest every day. Sometimes she is needy and bothers me while I’m busy, but it’s only because she just wants to be with me.

Here is a story: In my first semester of graduate school, I was still adjusting to life back in the US. I had just spent two years in Nepal as a Peace Corps volunteer where my living conditions were pretty basic (although not nearly as basic as some). I had electricity for lights, but no hot water, no refrigerator or washing machine, no computer or mobile phone, etc.

One day I was in the grad students’ office and my friend was banging away at the computer working on her thesis, which was completely stressing her out. She said to me, “You have this great perspective. How do you do it?” I said, “Well, this morning I had a hot shower, fresh food out of my fridge, had a nice walk in to school, and now I’m sitting at a computer where I can access any information I want on the internet.” I was still thrilled by things we often take for granted in day to day life. (Although I have to admit, all these years later I still appreciate a hot shower, a refrigerator and a washing machine!)

Even when you are feeling stressed, take a minute to appreciate the good things in your situation. Be mindful of the moment, look for things to be grateful for, and give yourself some perspective. Find things to enjoy in even the smallest moments.
