November is National Novel Writing Month (aka NaNoWriMo)! Every year, writers from all over the world make a commitment to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. The deadline is the end of the month, which helps spur people on (don’t we all thrive on a deadline?).
To give you an idea of how long 50,000 words is, check out this list of famous novels that are about 50,000 words long. That’s proof that you can write something significant and memorable in that number of words.
NaNoWriMo is a non-profit organization and their mission statement is:
National Novel Writing Month believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page.
And about writing a novel in a month they say:
Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel.
On their website NaNoWriMo.org you can sign up to participate, see where in the world other writers are, find inspiration and be part of the commmunity.
