Time management Monday: Easing into it

testing the waters

Most of us are back at work today after having the holidays off. Now that you are back at work you might feel a bit dazed after the end of the year crunch and then the holidays. Here’s how to ease yourself back into work mode.

You might be tempted to try to jump right in where you left off before the break. But taking some time this morning to figure out your next actions and priorities will keep you from running around in circles.

Hopefully at the end of the year you did an annual review to wrap up your year and figure out what you need to do now. If you didn’t, it’s not too late. You can read this post to see how to review the past year to help you start this year on the right track.

Now get out a piece of paper and write some lists:

What loose ends are carried over from last year? Write down everything you can think of that still needs to be done.

What projects are ongoing? What is their current status? Get up to date with all of your projects so you know where they stand.

What new things are happening now? What is coming up soon that you need to prepare for? Write it all down.

Take a look at your lists and prioritize your actions. Highlight what is urgent so you can make sure to do those items first.

Now that you know what you need to finish up from last year, what is ongoing, what is new and what is urgent, you can create a plan of action.

Get out your planner and fill in events and tasks that need to be done at a certain date and/ or time. Be sure to note your priorities, and incorporate your goal tasks.

Doing this exercise today will get you organized and will start your work year off on the right foot.

How are you easing back into work mode today?
