Writing Wednesday: Favorite book of all time

A Lantern to See By: The Bryn Mawr Story

The other day my daughter (who reads voraciously) asked me what is my favorite book of all time. The answer is easy, I didn’t even have to think about it: Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I’ve read it several times over the years, and it has new meaning to me in various stages of my life. For example, when I was a Peace Corps volunteer and missing American food, the scenes describing the sumptuous banquets and variety of food crowding their table meant that much more to me. It helped me understand the impact of their later famine. Scarlett’s character has more meaning and her actions become more significant as I gain more life experience. It’s a fascinating story of history and human nature.

What is your favorite book of all time?

  1. Pride and Prejudice!

Also, I recently re-read a childhood favorite, Anne of Green Gables, only to discover that it is racist! Apparently, L.M. Montgomery had a low opinion of Italians and Jews. ????
