Writing Wednesday, Page Per Day Challenge: what to write every day?

If you’re doing the Page Per Day Challenge with us, you might be wondering: what am I going to write about every day?

First of all, I want to say this again: when you write every day, you need to limit yourself in some way. If you try to write everything that happens to you and every thought in your head every day, you will burn out quickly. That’s why it’s called the Page Per Day Challenge. The goal is to write, draw, stick or put whatever you want onto one page in your planner or notebook, every day, for the whole year. Limiting yourself to one page prevents burnout and lets you be creative. You don’t have the pressure of feeling like you have to capture everything that happens in your life. You have the freedom to get creative and choose what you want to capture on your pages.

Let me jump in here and say: originally I meant for this challenge to be for the entire year of 2016, but some folks have already started. That is perfectly fine of course. If you want to get started, why wait? Whether you want to capture your or your kids’ school year, or you just want to start right away, go for it. If you want to get started now, you can of course use a notebook, or if you want to use a dated day per page diary then you want the academic-year day per page Textagenda (but hurry because they are nearly sold out).

No matter when you start, at the beginning of the academic year, on your birthday, on New Year’s Day, or right now, our Challenge is to use one page each day for a whole year. This consistency will result in a wonderful and amazing record of your entire year. It will paint a picture of your life for that year.

The bottom line is, anything you capture on the page becomes your record. Quotes, ideas, your to-do lists, a log of what happened that day, a sketch each day, anything at all is good. But, I don’t want you to be paralyzed by indecision. Here are some ideas to get you going:

When I first started writing daily, I used a day per page planner as my combined planner and record book. It was a great way to get me into the habit of writing every day. I wrote my appointments ahead of time, then as the day went on I captured notes and details throughout the day.

A couple of years ago I started using the Bullet Journal method, and a lot of people swear by it. It’s a modular system that is highly adaptable to your needs, and can be used in any notebook of your choice. You can see all about the Bullet Journal system at www.BulletJournal.com.

While using it, I quickly discovered what worked for me and what didn’t. I adapted the system to my needs, and ended up doing something different that works really well for me. Interestingly, it’s a lot like my original method I used in my day per page planner several years ago. I wrote about it in the post Using Your Planner With A Notebook, but I’ll summarize my method here.

At the beginning of the day (or, ideally, the evening before) I write the day and date at the top of the page and leave space for weather notes and the most important events of the day. I fill in my schedule and anything I MUST do that day. (You can click on photos to enlarge.)

As the day goes on, I fill in things I want to remember, notes, etc. I carry my book with me everywhere so I can fill it in as I go about my day.

When I was deciding what I wanted my journal to be, I took a lot of inspiration from how this woman uses her journal. I don’t do most of the things she mentions, but she has a lot of great ideas on what to capture every day and how. These include the basics like your to-do list, and goes on through Morning Pages, scrapbooking, photos, quotes, daily art like doodling or collage, sticking things in, etc. The options are limitless.

  1. I love that article! I fully do morning pages. For some reason my brain functions best in that tiny space of time from when I’m just waking up until I’m completely awake.
