Using two (or more) planners at once

Recently we received an email from a reader who enjoys using two planners at once: a Scholar for weekly planning and a Textagenda for daily details, lists and notes. I used a weekly planner along with a daily planner for years and it worked great for me. (Last year I switched to an undated notebook instead of the daily planner but my system works the same). Using the two together gives me great forward planning and lots of space for daily recording.

Other people use two different planners for work vs. personal life, which we’ve talked about before. The bottom line on that situation is, if your work time is completely separate from your out-of-work time, this works fine. Otherwise you have to be really diligent about synchronizing your planners.

I’ve read of some people using multiple planners for different purposes: weekly planning, daily journaling, food diaries, exercise and fitness tracking, baby milestones, etc. There are loads of potential uses for planners, but at some point I think it would be hard to keep up with many different books.

I have many planners and inserts (I currently use two personal filofaxes for day by day planning and one daily planner); I could probably condense everything into one bigger A5 or A4-format planner, however I can’t function without keeping deadlines and events separately because, unfortunately, when plans change (almost every day), my pages become messy and I lose sight of things that are due at any specific day like birthdays, bills, and so on

  2. I only use one planner at a time. I do have two separate reference books at home which have some less-likely-to-be-needed-while-out-and-about items but other than that it’s all in one book which is usually at arm reach throughout the day. I find using multiple planners to be extremely confusing and/or inconvenient. I think, for me, that the real value of the planner is the convenience of having it all in one book with me. It means less gets lost, more gets remembered, and I usually can put my fingers on whatever I need extremely rapidly, even if away from the computer or when batteries or servers have gone down.

  3. I use several planners at once, with the primary volumes being a daily Quo Vadis APB1 for work and a weekly Hebdo planner for personal. Depending on need, I will use additional volumes (usually in a weekly format) as long-term “project-specific” planners, such as health/fitness (food and gym journal), or a small pocket planner for tracking expenses. It seems that carving out certain life areas into separate volumes makes the endeavor easier to manage (track progress, set and reach goals, etc).

  4. I use a Space 17 for work and a Hobonichi-Techo for personal things. For my first Notor, I did use it both for work and personal, but I found I usually didn’t have enough space for both. Work had a tendency to drown out my personal things, and while I would get my work done, none of my stuff outside of work would really get done.

    So the separation between the two really helps me. Occasionally if I need to do something during my work breaks, I would write it down in my work planner as a reminder, but it rarely happens.

    I don’t think I could have a third planner for anything unless there was a really specific purpose for it. I’m better off with just getting a regular notebook for that kind of thing. (I have a pocket moleskine dedicated to workouts.)

    • That’s a great point, when you mix work and personal in one planner the personal stuff tends to get obscured. I like your divide and conquer method!
