July 4: Going anywhere?

Post Comment

During my first summer in New York City in college, I was surprised to discover that nearly everyone I knew was planning to leave for the 4th of July weekend — to the Jersey shore, to Long Island, or to points further afield.

By now, I take it as a given that we’ll be up in Massachusetts; the only question is how to get there without getting trapped on I-95 for hours and hours on end. But there are pleasures to be had from sticking around, as well — not just in the city, where fireworks are the obvious draw, but in the suburbs and beyond, where towns empty out and it’s easier to feel like you’ve got the whole place to yourself.

Fellow Americans! What do you do for the 4th? Does everyone go places where you live?

  1. Fourth of July is one of the best times to be in NYC! Indeed, the city is empty and it feels wonderful, even it it’s hot and humid. On my agenda for later today are a movie and a meal out with my sister. No traffic, no crowds, no hassles!

    Happy Fourth, everyone!
