Every year at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Lori and I pull out old family recipes for cooking. Recipes for turkey, ham, roasts, sweet potatoes, dressing, fudge, Christmas cookies, we enjoy and cherish them all. When my mother passed away, the things I wanted most were the old cookbooks with notes and her wooden spoons. Her hand-written notes are the best part.
Reading the old recipes I see so much more than the words: I see holidays past–my own and holiday stories my parents told me. It is the same for Lori–preparing the stuffing using her mother’s recipe connects her to the happy times growing up, and also to her mother who she misses at the holidays.
