It’s no secret that having kids is a good way to recalibrate your work habits. I’m not the only parent who feels that it’s made me more focused during the hours that I’m at work. Another thing it’s done is change my attitudes towards the weekend.
There’s no such thing as a working weekend with small children, unless of course your co-parent or another caregiver is available to take over. And I’ve found I’ll rearrange a lot during the week to avoid having to try to (or pretend to) work then, anyway. So weekends are back to being the pleasant, enforced break that they’re supposed to be, seeing friends, going to parks, and not accomplishing anywhere near the amount of practical errands I intend to. If I’m lucky, I can steal a few minutes of rest while my son naps. Unfortunately, I rarely get to read much of the paper.
By Monday morning, though, I’m glad to be back at work.
What do you do on weekends?
