The 4th’s not the 4th without…

When I was growing up, we never really settled into any particular routine for the 4th of July; one year we’d get together with friends, another year we’d go to a municipal fireworks display, big gatherings, small gatherings, and so on.

More recently, we’ve gone up to Massachusetts to be with my husband’s family. I can’t imagine a 4th of July without a trip to Baker’s Beach, but beyond that, there aren’t any rituals.

Friends of my parents throw a party at which guests take turns reading lines from the Declaration of Independence — a good way to keep things meaningful and refresh memory on a document that few of us read once we’re out of school.

What are your 4th of July traditions?
