  1. My father served with the U.S. Marines in World War II in the Philippines and China. He lost his right hand, and when he returned he had to learn how to write with his left hand. His pen sits on my desk which is always a warm reminder of him. Dad was an English teacher, and corrected papers using burgundy ink. I have found it impossible to put anything other than burgundy ink in his inkwell. Dad said very little about his service -I think he didn’t want to share the horrors he saw with his daughters–although he was very proud of being a Marine. My gratitude to all who served in all our wars–the dead, but also the living who returned with unseen wounds. God bless them all.
